THE GOSPEL IS, THE POWER OF GOD SAVES! FROM WHAT?
Updated: Aug 28, 2024
Salvation is an act of God. It is initiated by God, wrought by God, and sustained by God.
-Billy Graham
Did you know that Jesus is the power of God that saves?
In the previous article, we saw that the gospel is from God, and it is His power that saves all men who believe in it. This power is both revealed in and is Jesus Christ His son.
Let’s see something here.
'but unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. but we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; '1Corinthians 1:23-24
Now, the above verse says Christ THE POWER of God...
Aaand in the previous article we saw that the POWER of God saves...
'For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. '
So, what does this mean?
This means that JESUS is the POWER of GOD that saves everyone who believes in him.
JESUS is the POWER of GOD that everyone should BELIEVE in.
Now, let’s see something else.
The verse also says, ‘For I am not ashamed of the GOSPEL of CHRIST: for it is the POWER of GOD unto SALVATION to everyone that BELIEVETH…’
So, in other words since Christ is the power of God, we can rightfully say that Paul is not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is CHRIST who saves everyone who believes!
PRAISE JESUS!
SO, WHAT EXACTLY AM I SAVED FROM?
Now we have clearly seen that it is only Jesus who saves. Infact, Peter speaks so boldly before men and says that salvation is in NO ONE ELSE; in NONE OTHER NAME under heaven but JESUS. Beloved, may you speak this so boldly to all men in Jesus name. (Study acts 4:8-12)
1. JESUS SAVED US FROM OUR SINS.
'And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall
save his people from their sins. '
The name Jesus in Greek is Iesous which means Jehovah is salvation. Jesus came to earth to save us, the whole world, from our sins, not for a few, but the entire world. (see 1 john2:2).
You see the thing is, we have all sinned. That’s just the truth. We have all come short of the glory of God. But listen, my job here is to tell you good news! It's not my job to tell you how sinful you are, had or have been. That's what our intuitive knowledge of God(rom 1:19) and the law was for!
'Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that
we might be justified by faith.
Jesus saved us by giving himself as a sacrifice on our behalf. Not only did he carry our sins but he became our sin so that we can be made right with God.2 Corinthians 5:21
Through his sacrifice our sins are completely forgiven. I'm talking ONCE and for ALL. Mahn, what too good to be true news!
Study these verses on the list of sins Gal 5:19-21 & Romans 1:22-32.
2. JESUS SAVED US FROM THE POWER OF THE FLESH (aka body of sin/carnality/sinful nature)
'For what the Law could not do [that is, overcome sin and remove its penalty, its power] being weakened by the flesh [man’s nature without the Holy Spirit], God did: He sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful man as an offering for sin. And He condemned sin in the flesh [subdued it and overcame it in the person of His own Son], [Lev 7:37] so that the [righteous and just] requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not live our lives in the ways of the flesh [guided by worldliness and our sinful nature], but [live our lives] in the ways of the Spirit [guided by His power]. '
When Jesus died on the cross, he destroyed the power the flesh has over us. You see the flesh knows about sin through the law. But then this flesh is so weak it can't keep the law perfectly so it ends up giving in / working for/ serving sin, and its wages/reward/ payment/ salary is death. Jesus though, served his Father in the flesh so that he was able to keep the whole law without sinning. So when he Jesus died
(study verses rom 6:6, rom 8:3-4,)
3. JESUS SAVED US FROM THE POWER OF THE devil AND HIS WORKS
'Therefore, since [these His] children share in flesh and blood [the physical nature of mankind], He Himself in a similar manner also shared in the same [physical nature, but without sin], so that through [experiencing] death He might make powerless (ineffective, impotent) him who had the power of death—that is, the devil— and [that He] might free all those who through [the haunting] fear of death were held in slavery throughout their lives. 'Hebrews 2:14-15
Jesus became a human being just like us so that He can die just like us. But his death was significant because He died without ever having committed sin. This way, by his death, he was able to destroy the works of the devil on the cross who has been sinning since the beginning and had the power over death.
'The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil. '
4. JESUS SAVED US FROM THE WRATH OF GOD
'He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.'
God's wrath against all ungodliness has already being revealed to us. the word wrath here in greek translation is ὀργή orgḗ, or-gay' meaning anger exhibited in punishment.
The good news is, Jesus faced God's wrath on our behalf by his sacrifice at the cross. God is not angry with us anymore because we believe in Jesus Christ, that He, saved us from facing the judgement that we were all to face because of our sins. This was always God's plan for you.
'God didn’t set us up for an angry rejection but for salvation by our Master, Jesus Christ.
5. JESUS SAVED US FROM SICKNESS & DISEASES
'so that He fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He Himself took our infirmities [upon Himself] and carried away our diseases .” [Is 53:4] '
Jesus carried our iniquities and infirmities on the cross. Do you realize that any kind of pain disease and illness be it mentally, physically, emotionally, psychologically, he took it on the cross?
JUST FOR YOU?
'He personally carried our sins in His body on the cross [willingly offering Himself on it, as on an altar of sacrifice], so that we might die to sin [becoming immune from the penalty and power of sin] and live for righteousness; for by
His wounds you [who believe] have been healed. '
When I started learning these truths, I would close my eyes and just imagine Jesus on the cross imagine that the pain I am feeling he felt it and I begun to feel an unburdening the me I meditated on these truths. May the Holy spirit open your eyes to see the sacrifice Jesus paid for you my darling reader on the cross.
I WANNA END BY SAYING...
We have a lot to be grateful for to Jesus our lord and Savior. His salvation was not just for our sins but so much more. Kinda like an all-inclusive package deal. I urge you to take time and slowly read each of the points above for better understanding because they are interrelated.
